It was a festive evening at Highmark Stadium tonight, as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds revealed their new jerseys as players, coaches and team officials met with season ticket holders.
But the biggest news that came about during the evening may have been a non-soccer related announcement. After he completed his remarks and invited his coaches and players t o introduce themselves, team president Richard Nightingale brought up Pittsburgh concert promoter Rich Engler, who announced that he will be working to bring numerous concerts to Highmark Stadium, including the legendary rock group REO Speedwagon.
They said a future press conferences will be set, with more announcements regarding the REO Speedwagon show and other acts that will be performing at the three-year old venue.
This was good news on the business side for the Hounds. Coming off a year clouded by bankruptcy, and being responsibile for the operations of Highmark Stadium, having additional events and sources of income will help them with the bottom line and building a sustainable business model going forward.
This was a good first step in that direction.
But the evening was for the season ticket holders, who were treated to sample complementary items from their club level menu and provided an opportunity to mingle with players, coaches and staff. The players wore the new jerseys.
The two traditional Riverhounds kits (home gold and road black) won’t change all that much, with sponsor Allegheny Health Network across the middle of the shirt, with a Riverhounds logo on the upper corner. The new alternate jerseys, made by new merchandise sponsor Nike, drew the most comments — kind of taking on look of Italian Serie A club Inter Milan– the shirt is lined with blue and black stripes.
Most of my conversations with the players and team officials were pretty informal, but it was nice to catch up with some of the players who’s expressed their excitement about the coming season.
Nightingale also announced that the team’s apparel shop at the stadium will reopen early next week and the new Sports Bar replacing the former Bistro, will be ready for the home opener on Saturday, March 28.
