The Pittsburgh Riverhounds made some news today — as they announced Serbian midfielder Boris Zivanovic has agreed terms for the remainder of the 2015 USL season.

Here’s some of the information the Riverhounds shared on Zivanovic:

“began his professional career with F.K. Zemun in his hometown of Belgrade, Serbia. He recently spent two seasons playing in Hungary’s top division for 13-time champion Budapest Honved.

“We’ve scouted Boris heavily and he’s a very smart soccer player,” said Riverhounds head coach Mark Steffens. “He’s played at a high level and he knows how to get in behind a defense.”

The 25-year-old wide midfielder can operate on both flanks and will bring additional pace to the Hounds attack.”

And here’s some video footage of the speedy Serb.

It looks to me like he would be a good third wheel to maybe find time on one of the wing positions that have been so productive so far in Steffens’ 4-2-3-1 system that really gives the outside midfielders a lot of free reign and room to operate.

US SOCCER ANNOUNCES POTENTIAL THIRD ROUND PAIRINGS AS NASL TEAMS JOIN TOURNAMENT

What does this mean for the Riverhounds as North American Soccer League teams join the mix?

The announcement by US Soccer has the winner of the Riverhounds-WV Chaos match next Wednesday, May 20, taking on the Tampa Bay Rowdies.  If the Riverhounds beat the Chaos, they will host the NASL’s current third-place Rowdies at Highmark Stadium on May 27.

It would be a good potential match-up between what is classified as a United States second tier franchise (Rowdies) and a third tier team from a league that’s vying for second division status (Riverhounds play in USL which has expanded to 24 teams in 2014 and now includes a partnership with Major League Soccer — US’s top division).

Although a potential Fort Lauderdale or Carolina match might have been more fun, putting popular Hounds players from recent years (Jose Angulo, Fort Lauderdale, and Hunter Gilstrap, Carolina Railhawks) against their former team
