Thanks to an outstanding pro debut, Pittsburgh Riverhounds rookie goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas, has earned a spot on USL Team of the Week after a performance that included eight saves in the Hounds 1-0 loss to FC Cincinnati

Vargas made several spectacular ones at Nippert Stadium before a USL regular season record crowd of 23,375.

The 6-foot-4 inch Costa Rican goalkeeper, Vargas, played collegiately for NAIA Friends University in Wichita and last summer for FC Wichita of NPSL — and played for his National team’s U-17 and U-20 at the respective World Cup competitions.

Vargas is the second Riverhounds player to be honored on the Team of the Week this season (Romeo Parkes was the other).

In addition to Vargas earning spots on the team of the week, FC Cincinnati’s Jimmy McLaughlin, who scored the game’s deciding goal, also earned a spot.

Another notable player earning a spot was former Riverhound Tyler Pasher, who scored both goals, including a late winner, as his new team, Swope Park Rangers took a 2-1 victory against Tulsa Roughnecks FC.
