Another Plentiful Weekend of Soccer in and around Pittsburgh

Meghan Klingenberg and USWNT will take on Japan in World Cup Final rematch in Cleveland on Sunday.

Okay — to set the stage for everyone — this will be a plentiful weekend of soccer here in Pittsburgh and beyond this weekend.

Where do we start?

First, as all of the major domestic leagues are either done for the season, or in the case of Major League Soccer, they are on break, the International competitions will begin to heat up as the Copa America Centenario kicks off on Friday with U.S. Men’s National Team (ranked 29th in the world) taking on FIFA’s 4th ranked Columbia in the first match of group play.   The game will kickoff around 9:30 p.m. EST.

The U.S. Women and Gibsonia’s Meghan Klingenberg will also be in action right up the road in Cleveland at First Energy Stadium on Sunday (12:30 p.m. kickoff), taking on Japan in the second friendly match of the week of the week between the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup finalists.  The teams tied 3-3 on Thursday in Denver.

On the local front, the Riverhounds PDL team — the U-23 Riverhounds will travel to take on the Steel City FC ladies look for their first win of the season as they host Detroit in WPSL action at Ellis Field in Shadyside, with a 2 p.m. kickoff.

The Riverhounds return home — looking for their second straight win at home while welcoming back Rob Vincent on a one-game loan from D.C. United for a 7 p.m. kickoff with the Charleston Battery.

If that’s not enough –the Riverhounds Development Academy is sponsoring its Annual College Showcase tournament at Highmark Stadium  beginning with games on Friday then playing through Sunday.
