Pitt Outlasts Duquesne in Exhibition, 2-1The Panthers Conclude Exhibition Play

From University of Pittsburgh reports

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men’s soccer team outlasted crosstown foe Duquesne 2-1 in exhibition play Saturday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.

This was the final exhibition match for the Panthers, who conclude the preseason 1-1 after suffering a loss to West Virginia last Tuesday.

“We’ve come a long way since the start of preseason,” head coach Jay Vidovich said.

“Fortunately everyone on the team played about 60 minutes and we’re healthy, organized, our ball speed is better and we found a couple goals. It was well done.”

Duquesne attempted 13 total shots, while the Panthers recorded seven with four on goal. The Pitt goalkeepers made four saves, three of which were made by redshirt freshman Jacob Rooth.

Junior Roosevelt Angulo got things started for the Panthers in the 19th minute as he made his way past three defenders just past midfield and sent the ball past the keeper to the left side.

In the second half, freshman Josh Coan found the head of fellow freshman Luca Mellor on a corner kick in the 54th minute.

After 90 minutes of regulation, the Panthers led 2-0 but would allow one goal by the Dukes in the second overtime of exhibition. Duquesne’s Fredrik Borenstein worked his way past two Pitt defenders in the box in the 105th minute, bringing the final score to 2-1 in favor of the Panthers.

The Panthers return to Ambrose Urbanic Field Friday, Aug. 26 to host Detroit at 7 p.m. in the season opener.
