Diego Vieira buried a penalty kick in the 93rd minute to give Duquesne a 1-0 win over VCU on Rooney Field. Vieira’s goal, his first of the season, occurred after Zach Hall was taken down in the box shortly into the overtime period.
The victory, which upped the Dukes’ home record to 6-0-1, was the fifth Rooney win that has come in either the final five minutes or overtime.Evan Kozlowski tied his season high with six saves in posting his eighth shutout of the season for the Dukes.
The game finished with the two even in shots (15-15) and corner kicks (2-2). VCU had two more shots (10-8) – including two more shots on goal (4-2) – than the Dukes in the first half. VCU’s Rafael Santos had two chances, the first off a pass from Jorge Herranz 20 minutes in that slid past the right side of the goal.
Santos closed on Kozlowski from the left side and had his hard shot from 12 yards out stopped in the 40th minute. Vieira had a direct kick from 24 yards out in the 37th minute stopped by the VCU wall. Herranz hit the right post from in the box in the 57th minute in the Rams’ best second half scoring chance.
“Every game is different, every game brings a ton of emotions and its own battles, and today we rose to the occasion. VCU is a very good team, we handled everything they threw at us and we were right there when we needed to be,” said Chase Brooks, Duquesne Head Coach.
The Dukes complete their lone stretch of back-to-back conference home games vs. George Mason on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
