The round of 16 for each of the WPIAL four boys soccer classifications were played on Saturday with some close calls for some highly ranked teams (4A top seed Seneca Valley needed a late goal for 2-1 win, defending PIAA Champs Sewickley Academy were pushed to 2OTs) in some surprisingly close contests, but for the most part a lot of the results still went according to seeding.
Below are some game recaps and/or scores — along with the listing of the upcoming quarterfinal matches — all to be played on Wednesday evening.
Seneca Valley 2 Kiski 1
Coming into the playoffs, top seeded Seneca Valley had only surrendered two goals all season. But last year’s Cinderella team, Kiski Area, proved to be a tougher out than expected for the Raiders, the 2015 PIAA runner up. It took a late goal in the 76th minute by Matt Happ to break a 1-1 contest. Seneca will now face Canon McMillan.
Peters Twp 1 Central Catholic 0 (2OT)
The second-seeded team in 4A also needed a very late goal — in the second period of overtime – from Rex Hueller in the 94th minute to push forward the 4A-Section 2 champs to the quarterfinal round.

In a match which Plum controlled possession and had more shots on goal, it was Canon Mac that broke the scoreless game in the late stages, as Nathan Cathall scored in the 70th minute.
