Trips To Hershey On Line For 10 #WPIAL Boys/Girls Soccer Teams on Tues

moon-vs-montourThe long high school soccer season comes down to this week for the teams remaining in the hunt for PIAA championship.

Below is the full schedule– along with some brief previews of each match-up for each of the ten remaining WPIAL teams.   Eight of the 10 teams will be facing off against each other — and I will be on site for two of those games (covering rematch of Girls 3A Final between Moon/Montour for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review).   Three of these are rematches of WPIAL Finals played at Highmark Stadium, and the other, is the first playoff game between two long-standing Boys 1A periennial contenders in the past four years — Seton-LaSalle and Sewickley Academy.

Semifinals (Tues. Nov. 15)

  • Lewisburg vs Lansdale Catholic – at Hamburg   7 p.m.

Here’s a Trib Feature about QV’s Landon Grant leading up to the rematch of the WPIAL 2A Boys Final rematch, which Quaker Valley won 2-1 on Nov. 5.

Shady Side has never made it to a PIAA final, while Quaker Valley has won the PIAA four times, but it’s been 20 years since its last state title win (1996).

In the first match, Quaker Valley were the better side for much of the first half, and into the second half capitalizing on two goals on balls in the box from set pieces. Shady Side battled to cut a two-goal deficit in half to make things interesting with an Eric Zhang goal with 12 minutes remaining, but the Quakers held on for its 8th WPIAL title.

GIRLS

4A

Semifinals (Tues. Nov. 15)

  • *Canon-McMillan vs Cumberland Valley – at Altoona (Mansion Park Stadium)  6 p.m.

Canon-Mac girls got some redemption of its only loss of the season in the WPIAL Finals to Norwin, with a 3-1 win in the Quarterfinals in the rematch on Saturday.  Now they will have to travel to Altoona to take on Cumberland Valley.  While Big Mac’s Aideen O’Donoghue,  announced that she was committing to University of Pittsburgh last week, it was Hofstra recruit Sabrina Bryan who scored two goals in the win.

Cumberland Valley, District 3 Champions, have posted consecutive shutouts (beating Downingtown East, 3-0 and Pennridge 1-0) en route to the PIAA Semifinal.

MOON-MONTOUR MATCH PREVIEW

This will be the fourth meeting of the year between these two neighboring section rivals who know each other pretty well.  In fact, many of these girls have been playing with and against each other since they began playing soccer.   Moon Head Coach Bill Pfeifer has two outstanding scoring threats, Delaney Snyder and

Moon has won all three meetings, but it seems as if each contest has gotten closer and closer.  Montour Head Coach Lee Coughenour and his team are hoping that the fourth time will be a charm.

In the WPIAL Final, Delaney Snyder‘s assist on Emily Orr goal was the difference as the Tigers won their first district title since 2004.   The Spartans back line was up to the task for much of that last match, playing physical and slowing down the Moon attack for much of the night.

I will be covering this match — and you can follow me on twitter @pghsoccerscribe for updates.
