Season ends for Pitt women, with 3-2 loss to BC in OT

from University of Pittsburgh athletic department report

Pitt’s women’s soccer team concluded its 2017 season on Thursday evening with a 3-2 defeat by Boston College in double overtime at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

The Panthers (3-12-3, 0-9-1 ACC) twice rallied from behind to level the score with the Eagles (10-8-1, 4-5-1 ACC), who needed a victory to qualify for the ACC Tournament. Despite a valiant effort from Pitt, a header from a corner with 5:47 left in the second overtime gave Boston College the win it required.

“I was really pleased with our overall effort,” said head coach Greg Miller. “We played with heart, we played together, we played with intensity and we played with a real purpose. We went through a list of things before the game of stuff to play for and I have pride in a program moving forward and trying to send the seniors off one last time. Unfortunately we came up a little short but I’m really proud of our effort tonight.”

Boston College would net the first goal of the evening, scoring in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead on a rebound attempt converted by Jenna Bike.

For the second straight game, Sarah Krause would tie things up for the Panthers, connecting on a takeaway in the box in the 32nd minute to knot the score at 1-1.

The Eagles surged ahead again late in the first half to take a 2-1 lead into the break when Lauren Berman scored in the 41st minute of action.

Pitt pressed for an equalizer for much of the second half, and those efforts were rewarded when Vildan Kardesler scored a wonderful goal in the 85th minute. The freshman cut in from the left wing and unleashed an unstoppable shot off the underside of the crossbar to tie the game at 2-2.

Both teams had chances to win the game in the overtime sessions. In the end, it was Gianna Mitchell who connected with a header off a corner kick from Sam Coffey to settle the spirited contest and lift the Eagles into the postseason.

Goalkeeper Amaia Pena made 10 saves for the Panthers in the season-ending defeat.
