FOLLOW THE ACTION HERE:
10:18 p.m. – here’s my recap of Penn Trafford’s win — including video of interview with Head Coach Jackie Bartko.
10:15 p.m. — so all of the defending champs from 2016 are back in the finals in 2017:
Shady Side (1A), Freedom (2A), Moon (3A) and Norwin (4A).
And each will face a pretty tough challenge in repeat (or 3-peat in case of Norwin) bids.
10:06 p.m. – defending champions, Moon in 3A, also had little trouble tonight. As we’ll now have (throw in the interstellar jokes here) Moon vs Mars the final at Highmark Stadium.
10:04 p.m. – defending 1A champs — Shady Side rolls into the final for yet another match with section rivals — Greensburg Central Catholic.
9:35 p.m. – it’s over here at Fox Chapel — Norwin beats North Allegheny 2-0.
The Knights will be heading to Highmark Stadium to go for the three-peat — and they’ll have to do it against section rivals Penn Trafford, the only team that’s beaten them in WPIAL match in the past three years.
9:20 p.m. – with 11 minutes left here, Norwin carrying most of the play, but North Allegheny finding some room on the width — and have sent some crosses into the box, but Wexell’s been solid on all balls in air.
9 p.m. – 2A – halftime score: Freedom 2 Yough 0
Freedom goals scored by Chloe Keller and Lyndsee Monac
8:59 p.m. – Norwin taking command of this one — another goal early in the half.
8:43 p.m. – halftime here — pretty quiet final 30 minutes of the 1st half — and Norwin still holding on to 1-0 lead on strength of Emily Harrigan strike.
8:12 p.m. – Sam Wexell, Norwin’s keeper and Ohio University commit makes a dazzling save on a ball played quickly to near post.
8:05 p.m. – GOAL – Norwin scores just two minutes into match with North Allegheny. It was Emily Harrigan with a shot that NA keeper Olivia Ruppersburger.
7:45 p.m. – early game final scores:
3A – Mars 2, South Park 1
4A – Penn Trafford 2, Upper St. Clair
2A – Waynesburg 7, Freeport 0 — The Yellow Jackets make it to a WPIAL soccer final for the first time in school history.
1A – Greensburg Central Catholic 1, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 0
7:34 p.m. – Jordan Lawrence with the game winner for Penn Trafford — beating Upper St. Clair with a goal with one minute remaining in the match. PT’s Lauran Stovar took the ball all the way to the left side endline — cut back a nice pass to Mackenzie Aunkst at the top of the box. Aunkst had the presence of mind to play the ball to a wide open Lawrence by the far post who had all kinds of time to bury the clinical finish.
It ended a match that was played at a furious pace — after the Warriors tied it up at 1-1 in the 60th minute.
Penn Trafford will now await the winner of Norwin-North Allegheny.
7:12 p.m. –
Greensburg Central Catholic 1, CW North Catholic 0, 2nd Half. Alexa Schwerha breaks the deadlock!
Waynesburg Central 3, Freeport 0
Upper St. Clair 1, Penn Trafford 0
6:05 p.m. — a weather forecast for the evening — chilly but clear…
