Century United, Beadling provide high level college showcases

On the heels of this past week’s National Signing Day — area local area clubs are now focused on providing opportunities to give their players with aspirations to play at the next level with opportunities to play before college coaches.

The Pittsburgh region will see some high quality showcases in the coming weeks — starting with the Boys soccer showcase hosted by Century United at Cool Springs this Saturday and Sunday, February 10 and 11.

The Century boys showcase will feature some of the top boys soccer clubs on the East Coast and from the Midwest as the event now moves into its third year forming into an event that has become a staple and popular event for some top level program.

“We’re at that point now we’re refining and growing this event,” Larry Fingers, Century United. “We have a waiting list, and we’d love to have more clubs be able to participate, but when you can get teams to come from as far as Ohio and Maryland, this is good for Pittsburgh soccer.”

Games at Cool Springs this weekend are open to the public.  (For more detailed schedule, visit Century United’s website.)

The showcase will feature a captured audience of college coaches from more than six dozen schools — many NCAA Division I — that Century United can accommodate with an isolated viewing area above the field looking down on a full sized indoor field at Cool Springs.

“With having a full field indoor facility like Cool Springs, we can pretty much guarantee they’ll be playing games against quality competition” said Fingers, who also serves as head coach of boys soccer team at Canon-McMillan High School.

Along with Century’s teams, the teams coming to Pittsburgh for the event include:

Baltimore Celtic (MD), HMMS (PA), Everest (OH), Pennsylvania Classics, Pipeline SC (MD) and SCS United (PA).

As previously mentioned and written about here on Pittsburgh Soccer Report, this is not an unprecedented effort by local clubs to host college coaches, as Century United and most of the other soccer clubs in our region have hosted showcases over the years, some in different times of the year and to varying audiences of players and coaches.

Beadling SC, which is affiliated with MLS’ D.C. United Academy, will be hosting a college showcase event on February 25 at Southpointe Fieldhouse from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.– featuring competition between Beadling’s U15-U19 teams against DC United Academy teams.

“We are proud to provide this exceptional opportunity for our players to compete with talented DC United Academy and be evaluated by college coaches at our annual showcase.” Denny Kohlmyer, said.

This will be an exclusive two-club showcase event.

“We very much look forward to playing in the Beadling showcase in front of many the top college coaches in the region, ” Ryan Martin, DC United Academy Director. “This is another example of our exclusive affiliation with our friends with Beadling SC.”

Century and Beadling showcases aren’t limited to the boys.

The Beadling girls will actually be hosting a two-day showcase on February 17 and 18, also at the Southpoint Fieldhouse — and Century United will be hosting a handful of teams as well on the same weekend.

Editor’s Note: I’ll be looking forward to catching some of the action on Sunday, and meeting with with numerous college coaches — and will have more to share next week.
